Survival Skills – about us

Filed under: Who are we? — survivalskills @ 11:26 am

You’re looking at the new Blog of Kevin Williams of Survival Skills Rider Training. Survival Skills is a motorcycle training school, and I’m a BTEC-qualified instructor specialising in post-test and advanced motorcycle rider training. I write a regular column on bike safety for the Motorcycle Action Group Journal “The Road” and I’m also the author of three CDROM-based e-books on rider training for new and expeirenced riders. I’m also an approved trainer and assessor for Buckinghamshire County Council.

You can find our main site here.

Survival Skills has been running for over ten years, was one of the very first schools to offer flexible but structured advanced rider training courses aimed at the differing needs of newly qualified riders, returning riders and experienced riders and is probably the first to offer e-learning courses.

Scheduled advanced rider training courses run from Kent, Oxford & Northern France, and several times a year Survival Skills goes “on tour” to locations like Devon, Wales and Yorkshire.

Bespoke training can be arranged anywhere in the UK – we’ve run a course on the Isle of Man – or even Europe – we’ve been to Southern France and Portugal to run Survival Skills courses. e-learning courses are available to anyone living in the UK – log into our e-learning centre for details.

Survival Skills rider training courses are suitable for ALL full licence holders -
we train everyone
from the newly qualified to highly experienced!

Survival Skills attracts riders from all from over the UK for training as well as from further afield – notably Canada and Senegal.

We teach Survival Skills – a pragmatic approach to riding that accepts that everyone – ourselves and other riders included – make mistakes.

By learning how and why road users foul up, we’ll have a better understanding of where accidents happen. Knowing that, we can learn to avoid those situations, and so ride with less risks and also have more fun where it’s safe to do so.

I swear that Kevin is the most sensible talking, straight-up, common
sense biker I’ve ever seen in 20 years… I stop and listen when he’s
on. I might learn something that will save my life even if I consider
myself very experienced. (

By using a combination of structured training and fault-fixing coaching based on riding assessments, our on-road training will offer new ideas for you to try as well as the opportunity to fix existing problems, using modern training aids like radios and on-bike video. Most courses are a mixture of theory and discussion sessions, mixing practical riding tuition with exploring theory.

Alternatively you can explore better riding skills using distance learning techniques.

Or you can “teach yourself” with our CDROM guides.
“Course Notes” v3.0 – advanced riding skills in CDROM format. “simple and uncluttered advice”.
“Getting Started” v1.0 – guidance on how to pass the bike test in CDROM format. “just what I wanted to know”.
“Tarmac Tactics” v1.0 – practical riding techniques for surviving on todays roads in CDROM format.

Basic training is just that. It’s good enough to get you mobile on two wheels and keep you generally safe. But there’s a lot more to getting the most out of your bike.

Survival Skills advanced motorcycle training helps you do that.

The next post explains a little about who I am, and what Survival Skills is all about.

In finest tradition of blogs, I intend to use the facility to capture “stream of conciousness” thinking, as an adjunct to, rather than a replacement for, the Riding Skills tips already on the Survival Skills website.

Over the next few day’s I’ll be population the Blog with some of the more interesting old articles from the Editorial archive

Hope to see you again soon.
